Happy New Year from the Central Wisconsin Tobacco Free Coalition! As we dive in to 2019 there is plenty of work to be done to create a community that encourages tobacco and nicotine free living in Marathon, Wood, and Portage counties!

Thank you to those who support this work and continue to take steps that focus on identifying and eliminating tobacco related disparities. As we look forward to another great year, it’s important to reflect on the great things that happened in 2018!

2018 Coalition Highlights

  • 20 meetings with local and state leaders
  • 15 community presentations including 5 school districts
  • Over 20 media stories published
  • 60 new website subscribers
  • Education on best practice given to the City of Wausau when smoke-free parks was considered
  • North Central Health Care implemented nicotine treatment in outpatient department
  • FACT earned 3 published media stories, 10 FACTivisms, & met with 1 state representative
  • Underage tobacco sales decreased in Portage County
  • City of Stevens Point addressed possession of e-cigarettes among minors
  • Countless relationships built, maintained, and expanded in all of our counties

Mark your calendars for the first coalition meeting of 2019 that will be held on Friday, March 1 from 10:00AM-12:00PM at the Portage County Health and Human Services Department (817 Whiting Avenue, Stevens Point, WI 54481). There will be a new call-in option available. Details will be posted at a later date.

Vaping Event is a Success

On December 13th, the Central Wisconsin Tobacco Free Coalition hosted a free community event on the facts about vaping and resources available. There were 65 attendees including representation from law enforcement, health care, schools, and the state legislature. Thanks to our partner presenters from Marshfield Clinic and UW-Center for Tobacco Research & Intervention, North Central Health Care for the meeting space, and the Marathon County AOD Partnership for recording one of the sessions. Underage Tobacco Sales Down 18% in Wisconsin

Underage tobacco sales in Wisconsin fell from 7.1% in 2017 to 5.8% in 2018, according to the Federal Synar Survey, which measures how frequently tobacco retailers sell to minors. To read the full press release click HERE.
