The next Central Wisconsin Tobacco Free Coalition meeting is on Wednesday, January 11th from 1:30-3:30 PM at Portage County Health and Human Services Department (817 Whiting Ave, Stevens Point). At our meeting we will be discussing our 2016 successes and planning for 2017. We hope to see you there!

Increase in E-Cigarette and Vaping Among Wisconsin Teens

According to the 2016 Youth Tobacco Survey, published by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, more Wisconsin middle and high school students are turning to e-cigarettes. Our Wisconsin Wins coordinator for Portage County and one of our FACT members was interviewed by WSAW-Channel 7 to explain why these devices might be more popular among youth.

FDA Protects Kids by Cracking Down on Flavored Cigarettes Labeled as Cigars

The FDA issued warning letters to four tobacco manufacturers (Swisher International Inc., Cheyenne International LLC, Prime Time International Co. and Southern Cross Tobacco Company Inc.) for selling products in a variety of flavors that appeal to youth. This means that the companies have 15 days to respond and if they fail to take the products off of the market, the FDA can take immediate enforcement action.

FDA to Hold Workshop to Examine Exploding E-Cigarettes

The FDA will be holding a workshop in April 2017 to gather information and stimulate discussion about e-cigarette battery safety concerns. From 2009 to January 2016, the FDA identified 134 incidents of e-cigarette batteries overheating, catching fire or exploding.
