Coalition Business

The next Central Wisconsin Tobacco Free Coalition meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 13th from 1:30-3:30 pm at Portage County Health and Human Services Department (817 Whiting Avenue, Stevens Point).

Local E-Cigarette Policy

On Tuesday, May 10th the Marshfield Common Council voted to include e-cigarettes into their clean indoor air ordinance. The Common Council also decided to exempt vape shops at this time. Now, the ordinance is being drafted and it will have to go through two readings at Common Council meetings to pass. Stay tuned for more information.

FACT Updates

On May 24th the Lincoln High School FACT group in Wisconsin Rapids met with Senator Julie Lassa. At the meeting the FACT members gave an e-cigarette presentation and discussed how these products are attractive to youth. The FACT members also shared the recent FACTivisms that they have done.

FDA Regulations and E-Cigarettes

On May 16th, the coalition was interviewed about the new FDA Regulations recently announced and what their affect will be on e-cigarettes.

Tobacco Use Higher Among Those with Mental Illness

On May 17th, a coalition member submitted a letter to the editor that discussed Mental Health Awareness month and the disparity of tobacco use among those with mental health issues. The letter also discussed the programs that are designed to help smokers quit the habit for good.

New Tobacco Rules a Step in the Right Direction

On May 26th, a FACT member wrote a letter to the editor about the new FDA rules on tobacco products and the hashtag, #notobacco4kids. The hashtag is all over the internet because of the new rule on tobacco products that the FDA announced in May.

Smoking During Pregnancy in Wisconsin

A recent study published by the UW-Milwaukee Center for Urban Initiatives and Research shows that Wisconsin is struggling to reduce the smoking rate for pregnant women in the state. The smoking rate for pregnant women in Wisconsin has remained around 13-14% for the last decade- above the current national average of 9%.

FDA Announces Final E-Cigarette, Tobacco Product Rule

The FDA announced their final rule on tobacco products, a rule that also includes e-cigarettes and premium hand-rolled cigars. The new rule requires the FDA to approve all tobacco products (including e-cigarettes) not currently regulated that went on the market after February 2007. Components and parts of the newly deemed tobacco products, but no their related accessories, are included in the scope of this final rule.
